As the guns and cannons blazed away,
We lost many good soldiers in that affray,
Aussies with Kiwis, united as a fearsome team,
They plot and plan as one, in a highly secret scheme.
Crawling on their bellies to wipe out the foe,
Hiding in stinking ditches, it was go man go,
Bombarding the enemy at the rising of the sun,
Using artillery, from grenades to the larger guns.
They smelt the gunpowder and tasted its dust,
Forging ahead, securing higher ground is a must,
With the harshness of the summer heat now gone,
Those biting, icy-cold winds followed on.
Throughout the war the soldiers used all their skills,
Trained, alert and ready to kill,
Closely bonding together like a brother,
With a strong and true friendship, like no-other.
But a lot of our best mates in whom we did trust,
Lay dying now, faced down in the dust,
So stop for a few minutes, this time of year,
Spare a thought and shed a tear.
And remember the first Anzacs, who journeyed by sea,
Onto the shores of Gallipoli,
Fighting to keep this country safe and free,
To bring peace to the world for you and me,
With many of our soldiers dying in conflicts far away,
So we can live our life, as we do today.
